The George S. Eccles Student Life Center at the University of Utah is a state-of-the-art, multi-use facility designed to support an active, healthy student lifestyle while enhancing campus recreation offerings. Completed in 2015, this 150,000-square-foot building offers a wide array of recreational, fitness, and social spaces that cater to the diverse needs of the campus community.
Facility Features:
Fitness and Training Areas: The facility offers wide-ranging fitness and training areas across multiple levels, with fully equipped weight areas and an indoor track designed for a full range of physical activity.
Aquatic Facilities: The center includes a spa, a 50-meter competition pool, and a recreational pool complete with deck space for relaxing and socializing.
Climbing Gym: Rising 54 feet, the climbing wall accommodates a wide range of skill levels, with routes designed for lead climbing and top rope climbing.
Indoor Courts: Basketball, volleyball, and racquetball courts provide dedicated play space while remaining adaptable for broader recreational use.
Outdoor Adventure Center: Connecting campus recreation to the great outdoors, the Outdoor Adventure Center provides dedicated rental and storage space for equipment used in camping, hiking, skiing, kayaking, and additional recreational activities.
Common Areas: Flexible meeting, lounge, and conference spaces throughout the facility provide dedicated areas for student organizations, campus events, workshops, and casual student use.

Mechanical System: The George S. Eccles Student Life Center utilizes a world-class mechanical system that maintains stable, comfortable indoor conditions for students in a facility built for constant, high-volume recreational use.
The building features a highly efficient Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system that uses demand-controlled ventilation to maintain consistent air quality during peak periods of student use without unnecessary energy consumption. CO2 monitoring gives the system a direct measure of carbon dioxide levels, allowing ventilation to be informed by real-time conditions rather than fixed assumptions. Humidity control keeps moisture levels balanced during sustained physical activity, preventing spaces from feeling damp or uncomfortable, while air filtration provides an additional layer of control over air quality and helps the building maintain the consistently clean, controlled conditions expected in a recreation facility.
Plumbing System: The building features water-efficient systems and plumbing fixtures that reduce overall water consumption and contribute to the University’s sustainability goals. Low-flow faucets and dual-flush toilets conserve water during routine use without impacts to fixture performance or user comfort.
