Utah Olympic Speed Skating Oval

Project Summary

VBFA was responsible for the mechanical design and construction administration of the Olympic 400 Meter Speed Skating Oval and Ice Skating Rink located in Kearns, Utah. The oval was first designed as an outdoor sheet and it operated that way for several years. Prior to the 2002 Olympics, the oval was covered with a 300,000 square foot dome to provide a controlled environment and year-round skating.

VBFA was also responsible for the mechanical design of the covered facility. The refrigeration system is an ammonia/brine system of approximately 1,000 ton capacity. Two (2) 20,000 square foot ice sheets are located inside the oval. This project was one of the first 12 LEED Certified facilities in the USA.
