This comprehensive renovation project rejuvenated a historic 1877 building, focusing on updating its structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing infrastructures, and incorporating modern building controls systems. Our firm’s key role was in mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering, ensuring the building met modern standards while respecting its heritage. With the challenge of modernizing a 110,000 square feet, six-story structure, our team meticulously evaluated the building. We discovered that 62% of the original temple areas had inadequate or no climate control, and lighting was suboptimal in many sections.

Our approach involved integrating advanced air conditioning systems within the historic temple, enhancing comfort without compromising its aesthetic. The building was not originally designed for the duct work necessary to heat and cool the building efficiently and effectively. We implemented an innovative solution, including variable volume central air handler systems, a water-cooled chiller plant, and an efficient condensing boiler gas fired heating plant. Our team also designed a new life-saving fire sprinkler system for the building. These new mechanical systems are controlled with the latest Niagara N4 systems for seamless option with many of the temple’s control systems. This project not only revitalized a landmark but also set a precedent in blending heritage with modern engineering excellence.
